Compared to 3D scanning, Smart3DCapture® requires a simple camera for acquisition instead of an expensive special device. This brings several huge benefits:

  • A camera can be used on the field by a non-expert operator, even under difficult/uncontrolled conditions: without a tripod, without respecting a rigid distance range, under adverse weather conditions, …

  • Contrarily to most 3D scanners, a camera provides high resolution color information, which Smart3DCapture® automatically maps to the reconstructed geometry, to directly produce a realistic photo-textured 3D model.

  • Because acquisition is not tied to the availability of some special device in some particular place,Smart3DCapture® is much more generalizable and ubiquitous than 3D scanning.

  • In contrast with a 3D scanner, Smart3DCapture® allows to reconstruct subjects of various scales, ranging from centimeters to kilometers, photographed from the ground or from the air. There is no limit in the precision of the resulting 3D model, other than the resolution of the input photographs.Besides, Smart3DCapture® can not only produce a dense point cloud that has to be processed/analyzed with some dedicated software, but also a textured 3D triangular mesh, much more amenable to display, editing or 3D printing.

The principle of Smart3DCapture® is to analyze several photographs of a static subject, taken from different viewpoints, and to automatically detect pixels corresponding to a same physical point. From many such correspondences, relative orientations of photos and accurate 3D shape of the scene can be inferred.

  • Smart3DCapture® can process 7 to 11 gigapixels per day and per Smart3DCapture Engine on average, depending on the hardware configuration.

Unlimited Scalability

  • Whereas other 3D photogrammetry solutions on the market quickly hit memory limitations when input data size increases, Smart3DCapture® includes an elaborate tiling mechanism which can automatically split a massive 3D production into jobs not exceeding hardware capabilities. This tiling mechanism allows to seamlessly handle terabytes of input imagery.

  • Thanks to its master-worker pattern, Smart3DCapture® supports grid computing. You can dramatically reduce processing time simply by running multiple Smart3DCapture engines on several computers, and associate them to a same job queue.

  • Even for a single tile, Smart3DCapture® makes the break: per tile, on a computer with only 8 GB of RAM,Smart3DCapture® can handle up to about 1 gigapixel of input data and can output more than 10 million triangles.

  • Smart3DCapture® is the only 3D photogrammetry solution on the market which can automatically generate 3D meshes with level-of-detail (LOD), for efficient visualization and analysis of very large 3D models.
  • Even for large aerial datasets, Smart3DCapture® can create a full-3D mesh model, as opposed to a 2.5D digital surface model which cannot support multiple points on the same vertical line. Consequently, no matter the volume of imagery data, Smart3DCapture® is able to accurately represent overhanging facades and roofs, building or monument ornamental features (balconies, door and window frames, etc), undersides of bridges and trees, etc.

  • Smart3DCapture® features a unique 3D mesh optimization algorithm which ensures an optimal placement of 3D mesh vertices. Compared to other 3D photogrammetry solutions, based on depth maps fusion, Smart3DCapture® recovers finer details and sharper edges, and creates fewer artefacts, e.g. at occlusion boundaries. Compared to solutions limited to 3D point clouds, Smart3DCapture® leverages precious 3D connectivity information tosignificantly improve geometric accuracy.

  • Smart3DCapture® generates high quality texture maps which closely match the resolution of input photographs. Texture maps feature a good color homogeneity even under varying exposure, thanks to an automatic color compensation algorithm.

  • Smart3DCapture® can incorporate user-defined priors in the 3D reconstruction process to correctly handle challenging cases such as water surfaces, glass facades, uniform walls, …

  • Smart3DCapture® automatically adapts resolution and precision of the output 3D model to resolution and spatial distribution of input photographs. Consequently, it can handle scenes with a non-uniform resolution without requiring to trade the overall efficiency for the preservation of a few higher resolution scene regions.
  • Smart3DCapture® reduces the size of the output 3D model with an adaptive mesh decimation algorithm withcontrolled error tolerance, thereby avoiding any unwanted loss of geometric accuracy.

  • Smart3DCapture® allows to explicitly mark input photographs sharing identical camera properties, for an optimal aerotriangulation accuracy.
